Increased incidence of infections with Enterococcus and emergence of resistant isolates to various antimicrobial agents became serious to various antimicrobial agents became serious problem particularyin impatients. Two hundred-twenty-eight
isolates of
Enterococcus were isolated from various clinical materials at Wonju Christian Hospital and then determined their species and antimicrobial susceptibility. 67.7% out of the isolates were E. raffinosus, 1.3%, E. hirae and 1.3% E. mundtii Agar
dilution
antimicrobial susceptility test showed that all of the isolates were susceptible to vancomycin and teicoplanin. The MICs(micrograms per milliter) for 50% and 90% of isolates tested, respectively, were as follow : ampicillin, 1 and 8 ; penicillin
G,
2
and 16 ; erythromycin, >256 and >256 ; chloramphenicol, 16 and 64 ; gentamycin, >256 and >256 ; meropenem, 4 and 64 ; ofloxacin, 4 and 8 ; vancomycin, 2 and 4 and teicoplanin, 0.5 and 0.5. Most frequently isolated species of Enterococcus was E.
faecalis
and most resistant spcies was E. faecium.
